36,845 Pounds of Good Eatin' in 2023

THANK YOU Volunteers for pounds of caring as well.

12-1-2023 (NEW AMOUNTS ADDED on 12-11-2023

It's almost a wrap on the 2023 season. As of this date, the Growers and Gleaners gave away over 34,847.05 pounds of veggies and fruits.

What's does a pound represent?

The pictured bag of lettuce is about a pound or a week's worth of salads.

One pound is also equals:

  • 3 apples or...
  • 6-8 plums
  • 3 big or 5 small leeks
  • 5 medium tomatoes
  • 6 medium carrots
  • 3 medium beets
  • 2 medium onions
  • etc.

In other words, 8 pounds of produce becomes the base for many meals and a couple nice desserts.

If you divide those 8 pounds of produce into 36,847.05 we gave away the basis of over 4605 meals in 2023. If everyone made soup, it would be many more meals per person, but you get the idea.

The pounds also translate into over 4000 volunteer hours of love for our community via over 100 volunteers. We do more than start seeds, plant, harvest, glean, make apple sauce... our organizational work and fund raising also ensures projects continue from one year to the next.

Besides helping to make nutritionally-dense food available to all in our community, these hours represent the time spent getting to know food security issues and each other by  sharing garden tips, recipes, pictures, lives... Each week our neighbor-to-neighbor work illuminates what makes East Jefferson Country such a safe and fun place.

Thank you all for giving of your time, talents, and tips -- it all helps when growing a community.
