Have you ever tried black lettuce in your salad? It's very high in nutrition and big on WOW factor. If you have a shady garden you might try some as dark leaved plants tend to do better in the shade. At Alice's garden black lettuce is planted along with green lettuce to have as a combo in a salad. She also inter-plants it along side potatoes, by the time the lettuce is done for its season, the potatoes have taken over. It's a great way to maximize space. Owner Alice starts all her own lettuces and gets her seeds from Territorial Seed Company.
Alice's garden is small, but mighty in its output due mainly to truck loads of compost when the garden was first created. It also has a well maintained irrigation system that keeps a constant flow of water on each plant.
Here are some more examples of what's growing now in this highly productive space.
The asparagus is past its picking prime, but will be back next spring.
These beets were seed sown a little over a month ago.
Cabbage, corn, and squash are sharing space.
