Inside Brian's Garden

October 31, 2024

Dear BG Team -

Tomorrow is forecasted to be partly cloudy with temps in the upper 40s / low 50s. We’ll start the work party at 10 am.

The Garden

We are planning on continuing Thursday’s work parties through November. In early-to-mid November we will organize a compost work party where we will tackle our 3-bin compost system, getting it ready for next year.

Next Spring 2025, we will plan to have a garden kick-off party where we will talk about the plans and planting structure for the next season.

Harvest Report … Last Scheduled Harvest Party for the 2024 Season

Monday 10/28 evening harvest for the Brinnon Food Bank was supported by Dianne and her granddaughter June, Lindsay, Jordan, Lys and Amber. They harvested the last of the kohlrabi, radishes and salad mix (lettuce and radicchio). They sent pole beans and zucchini that was harvested on Thursday. They harvested parsley, onions, tomatoes, winter squashes and stir fry mix bundles. The sent the last of the garlic harvest. All of this totaled 41.75 pounds of produce.

Beautiful fall colors of orange and green. And there are definitely a lot of slugs in the garden right now.

Lindsay, thank you for the fabulous garden photos and making delicious pumpkin cookies for the last harvest party of the year!

We were also fortunate to have some produce to send that was gleaned from Red Dog Farm for a community meal… apples, beets, carrots, collards, parsley, mizuna, bell peppers, butternut squashes, mustard greens, tomatoes and stir fry mix… for a total of 62.25 pounds.

104 pounds of produce went to the Brinnon Food Bank on Tuesday!

Thanks to October 24th Work Party Volunteers!

Mehdi continued weeding behind the chicken coop, adding cardboard and hog fuel to sheet mulch the entire area. Dianne removed the zucchini plants from Bed 9 and the tomatillo plants from the grow bags. Denny removed the rest of the bean plants from Bed 2. Amber took down the tomato house posts, covered empty grow bags with straw, and planted some fava beans.
