Inside Brian's Garden

August 28, 2024

Dear BG Team -

Tomorrow is forecasted to be sunny with temps in the 60s-70s. We’ll have a rolling start to the work party between 9 and 10 am.

This Week’s Harvests

Monday 8/26 evening harvest for the Brinnon Food Bank was supported by Teresa, Lindsay, Jordan, Diane, Mark, Beth, Brian, Kathy S, Karl and Amber… a turnout of 10 volunteers made this harvest so successful and we were all done in time for dinner! They harvested beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, garlic, parsley, basil, leeks, onions, peas, salad mix, summer squashes and stir fry mix for a total of 119.75 pounds. We also had a pass through of 93.5 pounds from food that was gleaned and left-over from Red Dog Farms for a community meal that Amber picked up for our Brinnon delivery. This gave us a total of 213.25 pounds for Brinnon this week!

Thanks to August 22nd Work Party Volunteers!

Diane weeded and transplanted radicchio starts in Bed 6N. Mark weeded and seeded; he seeded Afghan collards, onions, lettuces and Asian greens/bok chois. Mike added straw to top of grow bags with soil in them to keep the soil from drying out. Karl installed ollas in celery bed and created a design for our upcoming toilet area. Mike, Karl, and Mehdi continued weeding behind the chicken coop and began adding cardboard and hog fuel to sheet mulch the entire area. Kathy C weeded, removed aphid infested portions of the nasturtiums and removed dead poppies. Teresa weeded and collected nasturtium seed. Denny prepped garlic and onions for harvest deliveries. Lys and Amber completed a garden variety of tasks around the garden.

Tasks for August 29th Work Party

Planting:

  • transplant cilantro into an empty grow bag (empty bags are covered with straw) - be sure to add compost and some fertilizer when planting

Irrigation:

  • finish making sure all irrigation lines are in direct contact with the soil underneath any straw mulch, pin in place
  • check lines for any leaks or excessive drips and repair where necessary

Groundskeeping:

  • (HIGH PRIORITY) weed outside the north fence line where we will be installing our toilet structure
  • continue adding chicken-wire to outside north-fence line and sheet mulch along fence afterwards
  • weed aisles and add additional hog fuel to sparse aisles
  • weed vegetable beds
  • (HIGH PRIORITY) continue weeding behind the chicken coop, add cardboard and hog fuel to sheet mulch the entire area

Plant maintenance: (HIGH PRIORITY)

  • continue pruning grapes
  • maintain tomatoes (remove suckers and tie up as necessary)
  • tie-back peas
  • maintain cucumbers (attaching them to their trellis line)
  • maintain squash (encourage vining squash to attach to trellises and sprawling squash to stay in their beds)

Construction:

  • create a plan to build a harvest “spray” table out of hardware cloth and a wood frame (Karl knows the gist of it)

We hope you can join us in the garden to maintain this wonderful food hub!

P.S. Amber won’t be at the work party this week. The clipboard with this week’s tasks along with the volunteer notebook is on the large shelf in the shed.
