This recipe has stood the test of time. It's from the 1972 edition of "The New York Times Heritage Cookbook" by Jean Hewitt. Amy bought the book and has been bringing the bars ever since which earns it six stars in any household.

Apple Sauce Bars
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups applesauce (unsweetened, spice-free)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 1/4 cups flour
1 cup raisins
confectioner's sugar
How To...
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (the recipe calls for 375 degrees but my pyrex pan should not be heated above 350)
2. Cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy. Stir in the applesauce
3. Mix together the cinnamon, cloves, salt, baking soda, and flour and stir into the batter. Fold in the raisins
4. Turn the batter into a well-greased 9X13 inch baking pan and bake about 25-30 minutes.
5. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar (Amy used a cardstock stencil of stars to make patterns on the cake top)
