Inside Brian's Garden

September 12, 202

Dear BG Team -

Tomorrow is forecasted to be sunny, or partly sunny (depending on who you ask), with temps in the 60s-70s. We’ll have a rolling start to the work party between 9 and 10 am.

This Week’s Harvests … A RECORD!!! … 193.75 pounds!

Monday 9/9 evening harvest for the Brinnon Food Bank was supported by Mark, Beth, Mehdi, Teresa, Kathy S, Karl, Lindsay, Jordan, and Amber. They harvested 151 pounds of produce!

The heavy hitters:

  • Pole Beans = 15.25 pounds
  • Cucumbers = 24 pounds
  • Summer Squashes and Zucchinis = 46 pounds
  • Onions (many donated from Karl and Kathy’s neighbor) = 22.5 pounds

Wednesday 9/11 morning harvest for the Port Townsend Food Bank was supported by Lys and Amber. They harvested 42.75 pounds.

Mark thought we were close to pulling out a TON OF PRODUCE from the garden this year, and he’s right! Way to go team!

Thanks to September 5th Work Party Volunteers!

Lys maintained and reinforced cucumbers (attaching them to their trellis line) in Beds 4N and 5N. Lys also continued pruning grapes. Amber maintained squash by removing leaves affected by powdery mildew and pruning plants of excessive leaves to allow more air circulation. Amber also fixed the tomato house. Karl worked on the worm bin, retrofitting it by adding more blocks to raise it above the water level. Mehdi continued weeding behind the chicken coop, adding cardboard and hog fuel to sheet mulch the area

Denny removed pea plants that were affected by powdery mildew. Also, Denny found that the coconut coir cups that some pea seedlings were planted in don’t really break down that well, as you can see from the photo.

And we had a visitor to the garden… thank you to Dianna for bringing us some orange rubber bands that we can use for bundling produce after harvesting.
