Thanks to October 17th Work Party Volunteers!


Denny took down the north row of beans and planted two rows of tulips in Bed 5N. Lys and Amber tied up Aaron’s tomato plants in the greenhouse to make room to hang our tomatoes to ripen. Denny, Lys and Amber moved all of Brian’s Garden tomatoes to the greenhouse and did some work to winterize the garden.


Tasks for October 24th Work Party


Groundskeeping: 

  • continue weeding and adding chicken-wire to outside north-fence line and sheet mulch along fence afterwards
  • weed in between double fence-line (east side of garden)
  • weed aisles and add additional hog fuel to sparse aisles
  • continue weeding behind the chicken coop, add cardboard and hog fuel to sheet mulch the entire area
  • add straw to empty grow bags to cover soil
  • (HIGH PRIORITY) take down tomato house posts


Plant maintenance:

  • water plants in grow bags
  • (HIGH PRIORITY) remove any plants that are no longer producing 
  • beans —> seed bed with Cover Crop
  • tomatillos (in grow bags) —> cover soil with straw
  • zucchini —> plant Fava Beans in this bed (Bed 9)


Planting: (HIGH PRIORITY)

  • Fava Beans
  • prepare Bed 9 for planting (remove all plant material and amend soil with compost)
  • treat with legume inoculant before planting
  • plant spacing = 3 inches in rows with rows at least 12 inches apart
  • Cover Crop
  • Bed 3N (east side of row)
  • Bed 3S (west side of row)
  • Bed 7S (center of row)
